We use clay cat litter. It will give you traction to walk without slipping and it warms from the sun to melt the snow/ice. Then it is not hard on the environment or deck! Just sweep off when the snow and ice is gone. The clay just becomes part of the yard and does not hurt anything. We buy PLAIN clay cat litter (no additives in it).
I sweep outs or gently shovel. You can toss down inexpensive sand for grip.
