Would you please,Ms Renee, explain a little more?your question is not specific.
It's paint. With what is mixed in the paint it basically requires no prep.
Hi Renee,
Just paint it straight on. and use a clear or antique wax to protect when finished.
You can give it an all over look or just paint parts or build up different colours and rub back some areas between coats to highlight or give that distressed look......Enjoy the journey............!

I favor the Rustoleum products, their products and support are fabulous. Perhaps it might be available in a color —that you like?
Heres some helpful links, I hope this helps!

The other folks here who gave you how-to links are good ones to check out. I do a lot of furniture painting, and my two current favorite brands of paint for it are General Finishes Milk Paint and Debi's Design Diary chalk & clay based paint. Both require little prep other than cleaning and of course sanding any rough spots. They'll stick to basically any surfaces. The thing to keep in mind is chalk paint will need a topcoat (wax or a clear coat) for durability.
