Mom used to put a card table next to the regular dining table and with a nice table cloth and mini center piece, make a special table for the kids and have a teen or accomodating fun adult sit with them so they don't feel left out. Sometime she set a table like our sofa table right up next to it to make more room, sometimes she added another leaf she had special made that did not match but with a table cloth it did not matter. She took it off when the meal was over. Hope one of these ideas helps PJ! Happy Holidays!
You could use a sheet of plywood (trimmed to meet your needs) to go on top of your table. I'd use a grippy rug mat under it to keep it from sliding around, and warn your guest not to lean on the table when they stand up. To prevent snags, cover it with a vinyl table cloth and then your fabric cloth.
