I've never done it myself, but I've heard people say that chalk paint does not hold up to the wear and tear.

I would choose to use a few coats of water based poly over chalk paint IF I was going to use chalk paint on kitchen cabinets. My first choice for paint for kitchen cabinets is an acrylic latex paint in an enamel finish. I feel that would wear better especially in a kitchen that gets a lot of use.
