Can you give me tips for restaining my fireplace mantel?
I would like to restain our fireplace mantel and surround without taking it off the wall and ruining my tile. Is there a way to do that without doing a bunch of sanding?? What type of stain is best? Thanks all!

If you are going darker, you can scuff with steel wool and then stain. If it's sealed, you will need a more severe prep like mineral spirits or stripper. The last stain I did had the sealer built into the stain and I loved it. It was by Minwax.
It is actually cheap natural oak look that is lightly stained, but I think it has clear over it. Yes, I want to go darker, just don't want to have to make a huge mess in the house. Was the Minwax a gel stain?
You can stain over stain with minimal prep. Any good gel stain will work. You can go darker but not lighter. Minwax has instructions.
