Wire brush. For those "impossible" spots you can touch up with a tiny bit of paint to match.

I painted our rock fireplace, so I think brick would be similar.
You need to dust/clean the bricks (I used a vacuum), prime, and paint. Use a nappy roller and a brush for tricky spots and corners. It may take a few coats of paint depending on how much of the red shows through. But it will look great when you're finished.
