I want to repaint the kitchen and maybe install a frugal backsplash. My walls are that textured drywall and I'm not sure a peel & stick tile will work.
Contact paper is paper thin and not scrub able.
Consider buying peel n stick vinyl flooring (90¢ a square foot and up) and cutting them into ceramic tile pieces or brick sized pieces.
This gives you color options and a scrub able easy finish.
First, Knock down the texture with a paint scraper & sand paper block. Paint with a latex enamel. Then apply to tiles. Burnish when in place.
Also can buy a 4’x8’ sheet of faux tile shower board for $22 and cut it into slices and adhere with construction adhesive, then caulk the bottom. 32 square feet for $22.
Agree. Contact paper is not a strong enough or heavy enough material to be suitable for a backsplash. It will not adhere properly to any textured surface.
