Also... knobs are very inexpensive --- and huge assortment --- at Hobby Lobby. You can also buy knobs in bulk at Home Depot

Remove, scuff with steel wool, clean with denatured alcohol, then spray paint with RustOleum paint for metal. I prefer the hammered paint.
You can put in styrofoam to hold or do something similar to this, when I painted drawer pulls for a night stand.
I second cleaning them and spray painting, it's the easiest way.
I'd use spray paint for painting door knobs!
