Having that same issue. Bought a house that is a cosmetic fixer-upper, pulled up carpet and then our financial situation temporarily changed. So instead of wasting money on 2 sets of floors for now and the actual flooring we want I've decided to paint the particle subs so I can at least sweep. If you have to go with a stain use a deck stain. If you decide to paint then use a porch paint. They're a little better for the wear and tear compared to others

Nail a 1/2 inch thick square on the front bottom of the board, or glue it. This will be the resting place for the book. Then nail a hinged same type long board about the same thickness on the back for a leaning stand. Put the hinge part at the top and add a chain at the bottom to limit the bottom going out only so far.
