Here's how I found and restored this unwanted pine TV stand that I found on eBay for 99p. It's painted in chalk paint, and dark waxed the top with Annie Sloan.Full step by step here: https://thecarpentersdaughter.co.uk/upcycling/diy-dark-waxing-pine-with-annie-sloan-a-bargain-country-look/
Here's the pine TV stand that I upcycled. I managed to find get it cheap as the listing incorrectly stated wood veneer.
Being a carpenter's daughter l, I could tell on the photos it was in fact, pine.
The first thing I did was completely sand the top back to bare pine. It didn't have any scratches, but I prefer a dark wax look on pine as I think it looks more elegant.

This was actually stained and varnished.
After stripping back as much as time allowed, I cleaned, left to dry, then applied dark wax with a lint free cloth.

It's best to work in small sections and buff out any excess with a clean lint free cloth.
Here's how it looked now.
After keying the remaining dark wood with sand paper, I cleaned and applied chalk paint in the colour of my choice.

If not using chalk paint, you'll need to use a primer first.
After painting everywhere, I sprayed the entire piece, excluding the top with two coats of spray varnish in clear.
Here's what it looked like in the end. MUCH better!
