Hi Margo. I'm Cindy. If you click on the little blue house at the top of this page, left-hand corner, boxes will drop down according to categories. There is a box there about cleaning. If you click on it, you will see several cleaning hacks. Try writing "dampness" in the search box, (that's what I did) and different cleaning methods for dampness will drop down.

  • Hi Margo - There are several ways to get rid of mold, but most importantly, you need to address the root cause to keep it from returning. This article focuses on the bathroom, but is an overall great article that covers methods of how to remove mold, if bleach is safe to use, and how to prevent it from coming back. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

Mold and mildew remediation companies will use ozone treatments. You can rent an ozone machine from any tool rental facility. You set up the ozone, vacate the building of all creatures (human or otherwise) then let it run for the designated amount of time. Let the area sit unoccupied for a couple of hours after the treatment. When you re-enter the area, open windows and doors to air it out. The place will smell fresh and clean.

Use your ceiling exhaust fans when showering and cooking. Run a dehumidifier, and I like those small fans you can use in the window to exhaust odors, moisture, I usually give one to each of my disabled clients they are so useful..... if you have a spill a fan will dry it faster. I get the little 10" box fan with 2 speeds, about $15.

If your windows are single paned, you might want to use those plastic film kits during the winter months to prevent condesation.

One area most people forget to ventilate is there basement or crawl space which leads to excess moisture and odors in the home. Its very unhealthy. You can use glass blocks in one of the basement windows and install a small fan to exhaust the area, air movement will usually get rid of that musty odor.

Hello. Very often in humid areas like basements a dehumidifier is important. We have had the humidifier is hooked up to our sump pump in basement areas and the excess water is deviated out that way.
