Do you have opinions on insulating a propane water heater?
In order to attempt to save some energy and heat we are considering insulating our propane water heater. It’s in it’s own utility closet on the outside of our house. So we’re also thinking of insulating the closet as well, there is not insulation that I’m aware of. Any advice would be welcome.

Check out reflectix ( https://www.reflectixinc.com/) to see if it would work for you. We used it for under our house and it was amazing the results. Also, for the heater itself you can purchase a blanket made specifically for that purpose. I would go one of those.
I would use the styrofoam sheet insulation on the walls and the door of the closet that the heater is in.

I agree with Annie. Insulating both the walls and getting a water heater wrap will save $ over the long haul.

I would insulate the cabinet you have it stored in with 1 1/2" thick rigid foam insulation with the mylar on one side. That should take care of it.
Insulating the heater with a water heater wrap sold a Homecenters. Cover the waterlines with foam pipe insulation. Insulating the closet would also help. Make sure you leave grills, louvers open for combustion air. Air will only be pulled into the closet when the heater is on. You don't want to starve the flames or have flue gases backup into the closet.
