Painting it a lighter color isn't very complicated. Prep is the most important part. Cleaning really well (a microfiber cloth really helps the process) with a cleaner like Krudkutter, a light sanding after it's dry, and a good wiping down with a damp microfiber cloth to remove the dust. Since you are going lighter, I would seal it. I like Kilz, but, there are other brands. The sealer prevents bleed through from the darker color. It adheres better due to the prep. Then paint it the color you want. If you want a wood graining you can buy a tool to help you. A clear water based sealer will protect your finish. Hope that helps!
