Why not decoupage it with a pretty scene? Or paint a stencil on it and let the lights shine through.
If you want it to show through to see the lights then use net or lace to see through .fish net would work to.maybe a light color material to see through.
Stained glass paint or Elmer's blue mixed with food coloring works and you can paint any design you want. They both let the light shine thru.
