You will need to make the hole a uniform size - square/rectangle and cut out the sheetrock to that shape. Cut another piece of sheetrock the same size and install it with drywall screws to the studs. The seams will need to be taped, mudded, sanded, primed and painted.
Hello Amanda,
I can only agree with Ann, although Sheetrock for me would be "Plasterboard" and Mud would be "Plastered". I am English you see...........

Using spackle, which can be purchased at any local hardware store, and a flat paint scrapper will do the trick. You will need to sand after the spackle has dried to make sure it's even with your ceiling
Hi Amanda. Cut a piece of drywall the same size as the hole. Fit it in place with drywall screws. Then sand after it has dried for 24 hrs and wipe off any dust. Next is primer and paint. If the hole is in your bathroom, use green board instead of drywall. Finish up with primer and paint.

Depending on how large the hole is, you may need more patch...but assuming it's not too large, you can use a kit like this to repair the hole. https://www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-DryDex-8-oz-Wall-Repair-Patch-Kit-12345/100493601
