How do I build a removable top for my kitchen table?
I have a small oval table in my kitchen that will seat 6 people and I want to make a removable top as I have up to 12 people for holiday dinners. Must be light weight.

Hi Shelah,
We had the same problem as our family grew. For holiday dinners we needed more room at the table. We ended up cutting a large board in half (to make it easier to move) and put each half on the table - meeting in the middle. If you want it light, you'll need to use the lightest wood that you can find. However, the lighter it is the more chance that it can tip if someone leans hard on the edges. Putting ours on the table did require 2 people to do it properly but it did work. Be sure to cover the table before adding the pieces of wood so that the table doesn't get scratched. Also be sure to round the corners of the pieces of wood so that the new table top is safer. Since we didn't have a pad for the table pieces, I would use a sheet or large table cloth under the decorative table cloth to give it a little padding and make it look like a real table. Wishing you the best.

The problem with building something light weight is that it will bow at the ends where it is not supported by the table when the weight of dishes is put on it.
Hello Shelah,
You could use Two Hollow core Doors hinged together that would not take up too much room when not in use..............
