In my case I painted a white background first then the blue flower on top. It’s have a nice clean background ( rear view) as well as support the flower true color and prevent streaky look. I painted My in waves painting one single color at a time which allowed the paint to dry and cure -this system work very well for me

Hello Amanda. Clean the coffee mugs first. Most people use alcohol to clean them. Then paint your mugs with gesso. And wait for it to dry. This will help your paint adhere. Next comes the paint. You can put the paint on top of water. Dip the mugs into the water and slowly bring it back up. This will give you the marbled look you're going for. This is not for human consumption.
