Personalizing Bottles With Glass Etching

Glass etching is a relatively easy process and can be used for a multitude of projects. We keep a number of etched water bottles filled and ready to use in our refrigerator. I also make my own almond milk and keep a personalized bottle just for that.

The materials needed to get started are: Glass vessel, rubbing alcohol, gloves, etching cream, paint brush and adhesive stencils. The adhesive stencils work well on a curved surface.

Wipe the surface of the glass with Isopropyl Alcohol

Wash your container with soap and water. It is important to prep and clean the glass surface with isopropyl alcohol.

Martha Stewart Crafts Etching Cream, stencils and foam paint brushes are available at Michaels.

There are many styles and fonts to choose from to design your project.

Prepare the work surface with a protective cloth or plastic. Etching cream is Ammonium Biflouride and Sodium Fluoride~~avoid contact with skin and eyes. Use in adequate ventilation. I set up my work station outside.

Place adhesive stencils on container

Apply the adhesive stencils in your word(s) of choice to the glass vessel. If they are not straight, you can peel off and reposition them.

Apply a thick and even layer of etching cream

Using a disposable foam brush (and make sure you wear gloves), apply a thick even layer of the etching cream to the letters. Be careful not to get the etching cream elsewhere on the bottle. Wherever the cream meets the surface, the etching will occur.

Let the cream do its magic!

Allow the etching cream to sit for 15 minutes.

Rinse thoroughly!

After 15 minutes, rinse the bottle and etching cream under running water. Peel off the adhesive labels. These can be cleaned and stored for another use.

The finished product!

Here are some other etching projects I have done.

Using the Korken glass bottles from IKEA, we use these personalized bottles of water at the dinner table.

This etching was done with polka-dot stickers and adhesive letters. There are many different types of etching cream on the market at hobby stores and through Amazon. Be Creative and Happy Etching!

Vanessa, Good luck in your future projects. I was really pleased with how my Milk bottle turned out as I use it every week for my freshly made almond milk. Thank you for your comment.
