Fun Rooms for Boys
Grandma: Why not ask him what he'd like? ...over the span of many ages... blackboard paint on a wall would be a blast for him to use chalk on!
depending on his age but paint the room his favorite color and then add items he is interested in- maybe even take him shopping with you for some ideas

Hello. Have you thought about searching the visuals on Pinterest or Houzz for inspiration? Favorite colors, interests and age might determine options. There is a wealth of ideas and visual inspiration there for your consideration. That might lead you to decide on an idea or theme. After that I’ll be assembling materials and starting your room decor project.
A little boy wants bunk bed. You could also make a tee-pee and fill it with pillows. This way he could even sleep in his tee-pee. And, of course, he will need a flashlight to be able to read and be read to.. Do all this and you will be his favorite Grandma.
I have a friend who decorated her son's bedroom. His team colors were blue so that is what she worked with. Ended up painting the room white and sponging red and blue designs on top of the white background. Added a border (don't like borders myself) that consisted of baseballs, bats, gloves, etc.
His bed frame was painted a blue to match the blue in the border and dresser was painted red to also match the colors in the border.
Baseball bats were used as something to put hooks into for hanging up things like coats, etc.
Amazon.com has page after page of stencils to dress up a plain wall or door.
My son has navy blue, grey, some red. He has a brown bunk bed and loves his room!! Under the bunk bed we have black desk for him to do his homework. Shelves with trophies & hooks for his baseball caps. Nice masculine area rug. Just throwing out ideas for you.
If you don't want to do a complete makeover, find out what he is "into" and add decor touches in a theme. When my son was older, I did antique cars with wooden models and a removable border. The room was painted in navy which was in the border. If he likes superheroes, you could replace or paint the drawer pulls with themed knobs, add some tins on the wall that are like comic book covers, a couple of pillows with a character, and a rug.
Ask him! Kids like their rooms better if they get to provide their opinion. If old enough take shopping with you and give them a couple choices and let them have a say. Have them help choose color or theme.

Here's how I decorated our grandkid's room here. Even though it's a post about hanging a group of pictures, you can see the room. 👍😊
