Hi Jeanie. To paint a steel door, you should use exterior paint with an oil-based primer designed especially for metal. Be sure to lightly sand the door before you apply the primer and paint. Use 400 grit sandpaper so the primer and paint stick to it better. Then apply 2 coats of the primer, letting it dry after each coat. Good luck Jeanie. Stay healthy and well.
Just use exterior paint. If it has never been painted it's already primed from the factory. If it's been painted you would need to lightly sand any shine.

Make sure you get paint that is formulated for a metal exterior door. Almost every brand carries them. I've had good luck with Behr. All 3 of my doors are metal.
