Hi Deborah, they're all right. Hostas should be transplanted in late Spring (after the ground has warmed up and there's no more chance of extreme cold) or early Autumn.
You can dig out the clump just about anytime there is good growth. Since they are tubers and are very resilient. I have dug and separated clumps spring, summer, and fall. replanted in other locations and given them out as gifts
I like to transplant hostas in the spring as soon as they start poking up. Doing so in the spring gives them an entire growing season to establish their roots. I can't trust the temps in my area in the fall so spring works better for me. You can transplant bigger plants if you get the entire root ball when you are digging them up.

Hi Deborah... it may depend on what zone you live in as to the best time.
My mother has done it successfully all through spring until late fall. But it's best just before spring begins.

Hosta division
The best time of year to divide hostas is late summer (August or early September). But don't worry if you forget—you can divide hostas any time from spring to fall.
