Are they natural wood or have they already been primed?

Brian: If they are rough and/or dirty, they need sanding.

If they are smooth, they shouldn't need sanding before priming. After you apply a coat of primer, run your hand over the doors to see if the grain 'raised up'. If so, sand with 220 grit sandpaper and give them another coat.

They shouldn't need to be sanded before painting. Once you have them unwrapped and can run your hand over them, you will know for sure.

What are the new doors made of? Is the wood bare?

It depends on their condition but traditionally you do not need to sand first. They should have come ready to paint and don't even need priming. That's the way most new doors come. If you are hesitant, you can always clean with TSP and then you should be ready to paint. If they are bare wood, you will need to prime before painting.

I always sand my doors a little and then prime them and then paint. just to be extra safe,

Check with either the store you purchased them from or the manufacturer for the best guidelines. I personally would probably lightly sand with a 220 or higher grit then prime.
