Just pulled carpet up in basement. What is the best solution for cleaning the concrete floor?
I am not sure, Chris, if you have glue stuck to the concrete or not from the carpet so giving you some info on that as well as cleaning.
We clean our cement side walks with a pressure washer but that is outside.
It differs depending on what kind of concrete floor you have. If it is decorative concrete (usually cured), you basically sweep it to clear as much debris and visible dirt as you can; and then mop it with just a little water, to get rid of fine, unseen dust. (When mopping, do not use a dripping mop; wring excess water out before running it over your floor.)
Next, mop with a cleaning solution (usually, a little mild detergent in warm water). Again, wring out excess liquid prior to putting the wet mop to the floor. Work in small sections, rinsing your mop repeatedly.
Lastly, rinse the entire area with warm water, again, working in small sections, and wringing and rinsing your mop frequently.
After sweeping it, mop it using warm water with a small amount of dish soap in it. Use a tiny amount.. you can add more if you need it. You definitely don't want any suds.
A microfiber mop is very convenient. Sponge mops are fine. Sting mops will work, but they can get smelly over time.
You're not supposed to use vinegar (too acidic) or ammonia (too alkaline).
Chris: maybe this will help
This website has several ways to clean a concrete basement floor. Hope it helps.
This should help:
Hi Chris: This site is for a patio, but it might work for your basement floor, too:
There are several different products that can be used to clean concrete floors. I'd start with a product that isn't so toxic first (like mild dish detergent) before using harsher methods. There are some good tips here: https://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/maintenance-and-repair/cleaning/how-to-clean-concrete-floors
What do you want to have be your next floor finish?
As in that will make a difference on how clean and what cleaning residues are left in the pores of the concrete.
I'd start with hot water , a large scrub brush, and a squirt of Dawn dishwashing soap. Then rinse and mop with clear water, or use a floor shampoer device which would suck the water up. Allow to dry very well befoe painting/staining./etc.
It depends on the condition. Do you need to remove adhesive? If so, scrape and use mineral spirits to loosen.
What are you doing with it afterwards? There is a product for etching & cleaning that would prep it for paint or stain.
I would love to paint it! Thank you!
Vac up the loose debris. There is a special Acid cleaner for Concrete, otherwise, try washing it down with a strong mix of soapy water with added bleach. Let it dry into the concrete and see what you get. If you don't like the results you can always use a floor paint on it. Quite a few colours.............
