How to bend the legs of a tomator cage and why?

  • I've seen people bend the ends of homemade ones to make loops on the end so the can place a stake in them to secure them for when/ if the plant gets too big. It provides more support.

Interesting. I always put the wire ends of the tomato cage in the ground and have no trouble keeping them (cage and tomato plant) upright.

If you are putting your cage in a pot it would work better if the lower part that usually goes below ground were not there. Bending the legs is easy. Pliers of vice grips can be used to hold the wire at the point where you want it to bend. You should be able to bend the wire up and then put the cage in a pot with the bent legs pointing up. Then fill with soil and tomato plant.

  • When you are planting in a pot/container, the bent legs hold the cage better than straight.
