Stain and what to use?
I have a gorgeous hand made pine plate rack. Originally, I was going to paint it, but now I want to stain it a golden pine color ... I don't want a high glossy shine. Any suggestions on what to use as well as color ... also, how do you paint the dowels? I'm a senior and would appreciate some "hands on advice" vs links to videos. Thank you.

Look at stain samples at the hardware sore. They always have samples on pine and oak, so you should be able to pick out a color you like. Golden Oak sounds like a color that may work. The stain can be applied with a sponge brush or a rag. Wear rubber gloves or you hands will also be that color for a while. The stain won't give you a glossy finish. You can always cover the colored wood with a poly or other top coat. Get satin finish if you don't want glossy. Poly comes in satin, semi-gloss, and gloss. It also can be found in a spray can for easy application.

the dowels shouldn't be a problem to paint at all just like you do the rest of the plate rack - I have a cup rack and I painted it and had no issues
Lightly sand the wood and then wipe it down with a damp cloth to pick up any of the sandings. Let it dry. The Minwax brand at Home Depot has the color of ths stain right on the can, you can also refer to a chart, since you know your rack is pine, you can see how this stain will look on your project ahead of time. The amount of gloss is not included in the stain, it is in the protective polyfinish you select. Sounds like a nice project, best to you.
