How to properly mulch my tree?
I know that I need to keep the mulch away from the bark, not red mulch and putting down newspaper. What type of mulch would you recommend? What is the most cost effective? Any tips on what to do before mulching? Should I dig up the area then throw soil then mulch? Will mulch be good to keep my tree nice and growing?
Edit: thanks, my plan now is to dig it, then add some good top soil, then throw mulch on top and of course using all the techniques in all the vids and articles!

Hi! We have landscape cloth around both our trees with the mulch on top of the landscape cloth. It helps control weeds, and even if a weed starts growing, it's roots don't go through the barrier of the landscape cloth and are easy to pull. Good luck and stay safe!

View allMake sure the mulch is at least 5 inches away from the trunk of the tree and no more than 2 to 4 inches deep. Spread the mulch around the tree into the surrounding landscape as wide as you like, tapering out to the ground level at the edge of the ring. Use fresh natural mulch such as wood chips or bark chips.

Hi Mo, this might sound crazy but add banana peels and a little beer around the tree. Dig a hole near or at the roots and drop in 2 banana peels and cover. The tree will absorb the nutrients from the peels and the beer and the condition of the plants will GREATLY improve. It also helps keep the bugs away.

Hello. It sounds like you have all the right ideas. Do not make much volcanoes with the mulch touching the tree causing disease or rot. Very often it’s nice to put down newspapers or landscaping fabric to keep the weeds and vegetation growth from popping around it. We personally like to edge around our mulch beds.
The type of mulch is a personal preference. Some people like dyed mulch -double shredded mulch -bark mulch and there’s even an artificial rubber mulch.
You don't say how big your tree trunks are. When I planted some tree, I bought mulch rings (at Lowe's) that slip around the base of the tree. They have a landscape fabric base and some type of material that is porous for water to get through. No weeds around trees. I noticed that as the tree grew in diameter that the trunk pushes the ring away and opens up the slot. Any mulch should not cover the base of the tree. Top of root ball should be at grade level. Don't bury part of the tree below grade.
