Colorful Valentine's Paper Wall Decor

I love to decorate my home for Valentines' for two reasons, one I miss decorations after the Christmas ones have come and secondly it's my birthday on Valentine's day. This year I have made two decorations, some Scandinavian hearts for my mantle (see them here) and this fabulous heart wall decoration.

I even managed to repurpose some of the cardboard packagings I had leftover from my on-line Christmas shopping.

I used the cardboard to make a heart back for my 3D wall heart.

I then screwed up kitchen paper towels into balls and stuck them to the cardboard heart. This was to make the heart 3D.

I then cut a newspaper into strips and glued it to the kitchen paper towel balls.

Once the newspaper had dried on the heart, I added another paper mache layer this time with watercolor paper.

Whilst the 3D heart was drying. I played around with some watercolor inks and paper creating interesting patterns with salt and alcohol.

This is so I knew what I wanted to do with the inks before painting the heart.

First, I wet the heart with water using a brush and water lightly colored with ink.

I then created a tie-dye effect on the heart with drops of watercolor inks and salt.

I then used the practice sheets to make a heart wall garland decoration to go with the paper mache heart.

I cut hearts out of the paper and strung them together. There are more details of this on the blog at the end with watercolor ink painting tips.

This Valentine's wall decoration brightens up my hallway and I had fun playing with the watercolor inks to make it. (More photos on the blog).

I have another heart garland made out of old road maps that were easy to make, you can see that one hear.

How did you manage to get a hanger on the back of the large heart? I didn't see that step.

Love the end result. That splattered ink looks so fun and unique.

Thanks for the share & have a Happy Birthday.

Looks "LOVE"ly! One question tho, why did use salt with the alcohol inks? (I'm fairly new to using my alcohol inks so any good tip about salt can help).
