Can it work?
I have to renovate my house this year and part of that is reworking my bedroom closet. I saw 1/4” full size cedar panels in Menards I’d like to line the walls in before I install the closet system but I’m in a quandary. I don’t know what painting will do to cedar. I’m worried that the gorgeous scent and benefits of cedar will disappear once painted. I prefer to know before I mess up my panels rather than after. 😝 The panels I saw in the store were constructed like particle wood and not simply lengths of cedar board.

You can lightly sand cedar with fine grit paper to regenerate the scent of cedar.
Hello,
Don't paint them, leave natural or use a wax.
I have cedar fence planks on an accent wall in my front room. The cedar was light enough that I never considered painting it. That would loose the beauty of the wood. If light is a consideration in your closet look into getting a light that will automatically come on every time you open the closet.
here is some info about painting the cedar

I used those they're so awesome and easy..fair warning tho..some folk allergic to cedar
Hope you don't paint your cedar planks, such natural beauty is to be enjoyed. If you are intent on painting, then you can buy cedar chips in sachet bags, available at Amazon.
Cedar closets should not be painted. Actually, for older ones that lose their scent, a light sanding is recommended to bring it back.
Cedar cannot let it's odor from the oils in it out if you paint it.
The whole purpose of cedar lined closets is cedar repels bugs, and moths. Painting would not work, and might not stick well on cedar with oils in it. If you just like the smell of cedar, you can buy small hanging pieces of cedar for the closet, I also have cedar balls for drawers and storage containers. https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=cedar+closet+hang+ups&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
There’s no need to paint the panels. If your intention is to paint, I’d seek out a different material to use.
