Ho Eleanor,
Hope this helps you:
Painting Existing Tile
If your goal is to paint existing tumbled limestone tile floors or counters, you must go through a few additional steps. It is highly likely the tiles have been sealed and coated, meaning you first must remove this coating before applying paint. Sand each tile with an aluminum-oxide sandpaper to create a dull, natural surface that will absorb the paint. Although it is tedious work, taping over existing grout lines reduces the potential for damaging grout that will have to be repaired or reapplied. After thoroughly cleanly the tiles, add a thin coat of primer and let it dry overnight, then paint the tiles with your desired shade of color. Be creative and paint original designs, or choose a solid color that appeals to you. Acrylics or oil-based paints work equally well, but make sure they thoroughly dry before adding final layers of polyurethane sealer.
