You will need to clean it first. I never remove mine but many people like to remove theirs. Make sure you purchase a door paint, I would highly recommend Sherwin Williams. It will also need to be the formula for the type of material such as wood or metal. If your door has panels, paint the edges of those first, then the inside, then the outside surrounding them. Make sure you paint it on a day that is not too humid, wet, hot, or cold even if you are painting on a protected porch area. You might want to cover any windows and hardware with painter's tape but I just use a good cutting brush.

How To Paint Your Front Door
No different than painting anything else. Start early morning with 1st coat on a nice dry day. This will allow time to dry. Paint one coat horizontal. Paint second coat vertical. Ask at the paint store what is best for your door. Wood or metal makes a difference.
Hi! Since there are so many great links, I will just share my own experience. Prep is the most important part. Cleaning, sanding and repairing first, will give you the best outcome. I have done doors on and removed, and working on a door on sawhorses is much easier for the actual prep and painting. Removing them, and rehanging them takes some effort. If you protect surrounding surfaces, and take your time, you can also get a nice finish, leaving them in place. Watch for drips as you paint as they tend to be more of a problem if the door is hung. Don't forget to protect your hardware, because it's easier to keep the paint off with painter's tape than clean it off later. I usually cover the doorknob with aluminum foil or cling wrap before taping. Good luck and wear old clothes!
