How to spruce up an old box fan?
We have two box fans that we use on our deck. They are still functional. I take them apart every fall and clean them well but they’re rusty and dingy looking. I would spray paint but can’t easily remove the fan part (wires are glued to the frame, etc., etc.) and the handle and knob can’t be removed. I know I could mask and cover but seems like a lot of work for a cheap outdoor fan. I could just buy new but hate to ditch a functional fan. Anybody have any ideas for quick and easy?

While you have it apart, you could sand and paint the metal exterior to match your decor.
I would paint the entire fan, as long as it doesn't cause an issue with it working.
I agree on the paint idea, honestly I can't think of any thing quicker or easier than that. Use an oil based metal paint like rustoleum. If building stuff is something you might be interested in have you considered making a box for it with the front and back made of something like lattice so it can still breath and move air around?
as long as they are used outside (I have one also I use outside) they will rust and get dirty I finally bought an all plastic fan on a stand and don't have that problem with rusting now but still have to clean it - I cover mine with a large plastic bag when not in use

Old White Ceiling Fan Gets An Update!
Spray paint is fast and easy. But if you don't want to mask anything. Then buy Rustoleum paint in a can and use a brush.
By box fans I am assuming that you are referring to portable electric fans, rather than ceiling fans.
Are the cages to the fans plastic or metal?
Hi Susan,
Could use a rust covering paint like RustOlium or Hammerite
HelloI also agree that spray painting is a quick economical and efficient way to reinvent plastic items. Having paint and primer in the private proprietary paint brands really an innovative and successful product. Instead of careful masking could you use some dollar tree contact paper in a large format behind the grids just to screen off the areas where you don’t want paint perfusion?
Masking is the best if you're going to spray paint them. It may be more work, but I think you'll be happier with the end result.
Paint them or Use Contact on them.
