Gail Salminen on Dec 01, 2012If you are moving up, you may want to consider a camera where you can change the lens for different types of shots. I have had a Nikon D5100 DSLR for a few years now. I love it, you can change the file format and DPR. This could be an excellent time to purchase - have lots of Christmas specials. There is a learning curve to these cameras, so be patient and just experiment, or use the automatic setting.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Dec 01, 2012a Few years ago I picked up a Nikon D90...it does both stills and video. If I were buying today with your budget I'd go with a D3200 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Nikon+-+D3200+24.2-Megapixel+Digital+SLR+Camera+with+18-55mm+Zoom+Lens+-+Black/4826999.p?id=1218542603974&skuId=4826999&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=4826999&extensionType=pla:g&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!38529879999!g!!14443627719Helpful Reply

WallsTreat Studio/ Kass Wilson on Dec 01, 2012You can easily stay within your budget for an SLR. The killer is when you decide to get more lenses. I happen to be a Canon fan. . . I've had 3.Helpful Reply

Kathy Owen | Petticoat Junktion on Dec 01, 2012Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been considering the Nikon D5100 and the Canon Rebel T3i so you guys have confirmed my thinking. Still don't know which one I'll get but it will definitely be one of those two.Helpful Reply

The Everyday Home/Barb Garrett on Dec 01, 2012I just bought the Canon T3i. So far, so good. I just signed up for Kevin Palmer's photography class because I need help in knowing what I am doing. That's not the camera's fault. :)Helpful Reply

3po3 on Dec 01, 2012I think you can't go wrong with either camera on your list. I used to work at a newspaper, and all our photographers wouldn't use anything but Nikon (on the other hand, plenty of "newsies" use Canon, too, but the folks I knew best were loyal Nikon-ites)Helpful Reply

Kathy Owen | Petticoat Junktion on Dec 01, 2012Barb is that the photography 101 on video? The photography on your blog is awesome, what have you been using? and Steve I've had two Canon point and shoot cameras and I like both so it's probably going to be the Canon T3i!Helpful Reply

WallsTreat Studio/ Kass Wilson on Dec 06, 2012If you are used to a point and shoot, I would recommend taking a class. I have found that a full SLR was more camera than I need. Instead, I went to the Canon G11. It is considered the professional's pocket camera because you can still over ride the auto features to adjust for any condition. It comes with a wide angle lens and you can also attach a separate flash. All of the photos on my website were taken with that camera. The quality is there with the 14MP.Helpful Reply
