Darla on May 18, 2015If you're going to paint the brick, don't do it a solid color, especially rough brick. Just hit the high spots with a brush or roller and don't paint the mortar.Helpful Reply

Creativeme on May 18, 2015-There are brick dyes at the hardware store. I would rather dye than paint. Perhaps a dark color that has a hue the same as the wood. For the bricks inside of the surround I used premixed mortar and covered all. Then painted it in antique white. Mortar was very easy to use, went on quickly, and allowed the fireplace to stand on it's own rather than more brick. I did give the mortar a bit of texture. Actually you could do the entire brick area this way. Mine has stood up for 10 years and no issues of cracks, etc.Helpful Reply

Natasha at The Simply Luxe Life on May 18, 2015Replacing the mantel would be a good start. It certainly wouldn't be costly, just a rough hewn beam or sleek painted white beam would be great. I would agree with @Lagree Wyndham on the Ardex- that would be fantastic, though giving brick dye a shot first certainly wouldn't hurt!Helpful Reply

Kayo Frazier on May 19, 2015Here's my 2 cents...If you are painting the built in bookcases white continue on w/ the fireplace make that white too. It will give the space some much needed continuity & brighten up the space. I would remove the wooden mantel & replace it w/ a chunky 2' thick mantel in dark stain or black paint. I would trim the fireplace surround w/ black & copper about 2-3' wide. I would also paint the fireplace tools high heat black spray paint. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply

Capernius on May 19, 2015my first thought was whitewash the brick.... sand down the mantel & stain it....for the scroll work on the mantel, stain it a color darker than the rest of the mantel to make it stand out...Helpful Reply

Lindcurt on May 20, 2015I like the single horizontal mantle suggestion best. Maybe one that looks like the top of your present mantle but it would be the entire length of the brick. Rustic would not look well with your more formal bookcase. I have seen fireplace redo's that have been refaced with porcelain or ceramic tiles. It would be a more modern look. With that you could change the color and style to what ever you desire.Helpful Reply
