What kind of plant can you suggest to climb on a fence in deep shade, zone 8?
My backyard is a desert, we have huge Hemlock and Douglas Firs and will be removing up to three of them this year. As you know, nothing grows under Hemlocks and they shed a lot. I would like to grow something up my back fence to help provide some privacy. Anyone out there have any suggestions for a dry, dark, poor soil area that isn't IVY?? Thank you!

Sheila, assuming that Canadian zones correspond with the ones in the States, one vine you might want to look into is Decumaria barbara, or woodvamp. It is a relative of climbing hydrangea that sports fragrant white flowers in late spring. It may not bloom well in deep shade, but should still provide you with some of the privacy you seek. "Vickie" is a particularly nice cultivar.
