How to Revamp a Dated Sunroom?

Lara Walters
by Lara Walters
The sunroom which is the main entry into the home is not a usable space at the moment and I was thinking of putting in a built in window seat but I need suggestions as to how to DIY this?

Would it be okay to have the seat against the lower glass panes or should I remove them?

The back wall is a really rough brick - because it is so jagged and sticks out I don't think I could plaster over the wall - if I grind it back maybe a render would be best to get a neater more modern finish?

Remove the coloured glass or paint over it?

Don't paint it!! Add some artwork! And there's a great way to do a seat with upper cabinets - like for over fridge - set side by side....add some plywood and cushions...

I would paint the brick after chiseling off the extruded glue in joints. I would pick a color close to the travertine tile. Then I would get either some 1/4" plywood or veneer, pickle to a light color to match tile and paint to replace or cover the glass.

Now you have a neutral pallet, select some outdoor or other furniture to add some pop. World Market has some affordable outdoor sofas... https://www.worldmarket.com/category/outdoor/furniture.do or try www.wayfair.com

I love exposed brick but it does look dark for that space. I would try adding art and light colored items but if that doesn't satisfy the look, then paint would be my next option.

You may want to consider having an indoor garden area. I would add blinds to keep the plants from being too hot. You can actually create an attractive garden area in the sunroom that can be fun and decorative. I would not paint the glass or even touch The brick because it is a could possibly be a strong selling point down the road if you decide to move.

Yes, and if there's an outlet close by, you could add a fountain that would give added interest to your "garden wall" and some ambience to your sunroom for sitting and relaxing. You could add a trellis with something that climbs upward to make the wall feel more natural. An overhead fan would also be nice if there isn't one already. And how about a hammock or a porch swing to finish off your outdoor/indoor room feel? Could be a wonderful place to relax!

I would dry brush the brick wall a cream color. Add some art to it. And instead of a window seat I would put a small table an chairs on top of an outdoor rug. Great place to have morning coffee and a nightcap. To keep the sun from coming in I would hang either some outdoor curtains that can be pulled back or some bamboo shades. Definitely do not paint over the colored glass unless you want to add some painted flowers or animals or anything else that is nature. You could also do a tryptic painting on sections of 3 glass.

A big colorful picture and a colorful rug...then add a nice comfy bench with pillows....this will give you time to decide if you really want to change the brick

Since this your entry and should be welcoming and gives a first impression of who you are, I'd really think about how you want the overall picture to look. Beachy, farmhouse, steel modern, eclectic, etc. then go from there.

I'd paint the cement block. I notice you also have brick too. I'd paint that to keep everything from becoming too busy., and to keep it light, maybe the same color as the house. I'd choose one main color and two secondary colors that you like. Maybe something in black, like planters to tie in your shutters to make it all pop.

I would not make a window seat for two reasons. First, Many people do not like leaning against glass. It's unnerving to them. Secondly, and most important, your view is the street - not inwards, towards a house wall. Making a window seat will block the view and some light. Also, in my opinion, one can never make a really comfortable window seat. Most end up looking like what they are - a slab platform with some cushions on it.

And plants! Lots of them, using various leaf textures.

Whatever you decide. Have fun with it.

How about some vertical planters artfully spaced on the brick wall. I would look for metal containers (whatever attracts your eye and that could hold a plant) and hang on the wall.

I would not paint the brick, cuz once you do you are locked in. I think in this situation it would look cheap. Your house is too modern looking to carry painted brick.

Leave the glass as is. I would look for rattan or teak furniture to place in the space and forget the bench idea.

Grow a vining plant on the dark brick wall, or put a false wall in front of it. I liked the suggestion of it being a garden room. It could be a very welcoming space by adding some seating and plants. I vote for replacing the colored glass with a weather proof material or clear safety glass.

Ok here is my 2 cents worth, LOL, the wall i would paint with a really good paint made for painting over stone. The paint will soften the sharp edges of the stone. I would buy or make a bench with a taller back to it so as you would not really be touching the wall, over the top of bench a iron or metal hanging of some sort to accent the wall . On each side of bench and along windows I would set small trees or bushes but you get idea lots of beautiful plants. You can set an old chair in front of Windows and place plants on it and around it. Add a throw rug and it could be beautiful with your taste and touches you've added. Hope to see a pic when your done.

I would paint the brick a soft white and paint the colored windows a peach color. Would not make a bench but would add small table with chairs.
