Tv room/family room spruce up

Midwest Gal
by Midwest Gal
Hi decorating community. Please help me decide if I should paint my panelling or my fireplace or both. We have one whole wall of windows that looks onto the patio. The room faces the north so it does not get direct sun but is fairly bright during the day. No lighting except for lamps (task). I was wrestling with painting the brick darker and the walls lighter. Please ignore the little clutter in front of the fireplace-my 8 year old wanted to claim the old wood box shelves for her dolls this weekend so everything else came out and put in a box. Thanks for the help!
this is a picture as you enter from our hallway-there is part of the fireplace behind the computer and some of the panelling that I thought might be helpful.

If you're going to keep the turquoise accent pillows, I would suggest painting the paneling a light turquoise and paint the fireplace bricks a taupe. Those beams will need to be painted white to match the ceiling because they're too heavy for the room height. The yellow and peach accent colors need to go. Stay with the turquoise family for accents.

I would definately paint the panelinf, 've sure to use a good quality paint, with a primer/sealer. Once you do that, I am pretty sure you will want to do something to the fireplace. I woyld start with a whitewash. There are a lot of videos online to help with this process.

JACKIE, I would start by making cheerful, bright, colored pillows. With this almost winter time, I would make some spring colors, of pillows, and cover these with bright colors. Even pics of your favorite birds, or nests., or spring bulbs in bloom. This is just a idea, and I hope you have some ideas, for I want to suggest that you do not use dull colors, but cheerful ones, or baby birds. Hope this helps you. Go to the material stores, and get a remenent, and this will help you get an idea. J.

thank you Judy. The white pillows with tan are from Joanns fabric so I am all about making pillows. good idea.

OR - lay a bright color on the table, for this idea, with the colored pillows may help a great deal, and not cost too much, as well J.

I would paint the paneling white and live with it a bit to see how you feel about the brick on the fireplace then. What color were you thinking of going when you say darker? I like the brick as is and like your idea of going darker (as opposed to lighter) just not sure what color that would be?

  • I love the brick fireplace wall as is. And that dome on the fireplace is way too cool, just love it. I would lighten up the rest of the room, live with it for a bit, then decide. You may not need to do anything to the fireplace.

Sometimes, the slightest change can make a world of diff. Even, if you put up a pair of sheers in the window, can add a whole world of diff., in the room as well. I would have the sheers match one of the pillows, but this is up to you, as long as it is a cheerful color. Best wishes, and have a cheerful day, the autumn colors are here, and it maybe a special time to choose colors. Lots of best wishes, in choosing colors, J.

My own preference is to stay lite with the fireplace the copper will work nicely with the liter color. You could add some copper paint highlights to the whitewash treatment on the brick. You can always make the fireplace darker after; easier to go lite to dark rather than dark to lite. Good luck

Paint the walls white and the fireplace a light color. Leave the wood beams The natural wood color. Add a natural wood mantle.

    thank you:)

I agree with Charlotte. Start with the walls ... I'd pick the lightest (probably a warm super lite/white-ish sand color) for the walls. Then, go from there. Add a turquoise colored pot & plant next to the white pot on the hearth to pull in that blue from other areas in the room. Possibly add a large throw rug layered on top of your carpet with all the colors in the room to pull it all together and ground it. LOVE the beams. Makes the room interesting and cozy. Good luck!

This room is amazing! Based on you’re beautiful furniture picks, artwork and lamps (very much my taste), I would go bright and neutral so you can decorate with any accent color all year...first I would whitewash the entire fireplace (I just did my rock fireplace and it turned out beautiful) with either white dove or simply white by Ben Moore using flat paint. Then prime and paint the paneling edgecomb gray by Ben Moore (if it feels too dark you can cut it by 25%) but should be fine since your room is bright! If the beams feel too heavy after all that then paint those edgecomb gray cut by 50% white. Finally, if the whitewash feels too white you can add 25% of edgecomb gray into your mixture and “graywash“ the entire thing. Good luck!
