You can purchase at Lowes or Menards a plastic material and its white, easy to cut and use stainless steel screws, I used it to replace my wood trim around my overhead garage, works very will and I do not paint it anymore!!! lucky my trim is white, I did this over eight years ago and still looks new and no rust!!!
Teak wood would be ideal but it tends to be pricey. Plastic would be another option. However, anything not kept clean can be subject to mold & mildew in a very damp area.
Around your shower, but not in it? Try a 'floating' glass shelf. I've got a nautical bath that has several of them.
It's not the shelves but the paint itself that matters. KILZ primer & paint (usually from Lowe's or Walmart) will do the trick for kitchen & bath. It's formulated to prevent mold & mildew. Prime it, let it dry overnight, paint it & hang it. Also, when you put your screws into the wall, put some caulk around the treads to prevent moisture from getting in the holes. GOOD LUCK! :)
Ikea makes a stainless steel one with rods as shelving deck. They also make glass ones with metal brackets. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30291470/
