Honestly there is nothing wrong with your place. I think you just need some color. You can change the look by simply adding a runner in the kitchen an accent with colorful towels and accessories. As for the bathroom the same put color in accessories. I am assuming you are not allowed to put pictures on the walls or paint. Is that correct?

They are putting an accent teal wall behind the cabinets in the kitchen so I'm hoping that will make the apartment feel more fresh. And help make those cabinets not look so dull.

First, your apartment has great options! It has great flooring and countertops and a nice neutral paint. Use that as your blank canvas so to speak. Be sure to ask the landlord if you can install drawer pulls and cabinet handles. Chances are you can't. Get some pretty towels, a throw rug and a coordinating shower curtain for the bathroom. Likewise with the kitchen. A runner. , some hand towels and a bright piece of art would all personalize the apartment until you're ready to move on.

I'd do some homework on painted cabinets, & paint them. Then add some contemporary hardware.

I agree when you can't paint, Accessories can bring out the cheer and color needed..

Here are my before and after pics of my kitchen redo. I figured that painting the cabinets and glazing them was a whole lot cheaper than buying new cabinets (which was what I wanted to do, but that idea got nixed by the hubby) so I thought... what the heck...if I don't like them then I can just replace the doors, if I do like them then that was $80.00 well spent. Yep!! $80.00 well spent.

Conmand hooks and loop products will help you put up anything on any surface without damage. Metal type or mirror backsplash will make the space seem wider. If the wall is getting a teal color. You can go miami beach style or southwest style. Add clay pots with faux cacti and add copper colored plastic painted wall tiles that look like ceiling tiles. Put on with command hook and loop tape. Easily removed. Add colorful pottery and accessories.

Decoupage with liquid starch. Use a fine linen paper or fabric. Comes off with water and sponge.

I'm wish Terry from Lodi.. starch was going to be my solution also. Why won't they let you paint an accent color on the wall. Most places here are doing the one accent wall and it is all the rage the last few years. I believe hardware store like Lowe's carries a peel and stick flat tile like used in motor homes that would brighten up the kitchen walls. Maybe Dollar store might have something also that would be inexpensive to use. Take the time a do some shopping. It will be fun and relaxing.
