I would paint the room white or off white. If you have heavy curtains, replace them with something that lets the light in. You can add a mirror to reflect any light that does come in.

Any type of white or very light cream. Also paint the ceiling the same color as walls. A lot of open space. Don't clutter walls with decor. Hang curtains where the rod is just below the ceiling line and all the way to the floor. Remember simplicity is ELEGANCE. Less is always better than more.

Hi! Light, airy colors, curtain rods as high as possible above your windows, furniture scaled to fit (preferably with legs showing), and neutral and pops of color and texture. I like metal accents and mirrors, too.

all of the above are perfect suggestions. keep it light and airy with minimal furniture and décor and use of mirrors that will reflect light. No heavy drapes or furniture. Creams, pale yellows, lite blue, whites or lite pewter greys would be lovely and go with anything.

-Wash the windows, walls and ceiling if you are physically able to.

-Paint the ceiling white, or hire someone to freshly paint it white.

-Remove glass coverings on light fixtures and wash well. Replace any plastic coverings if they have yellowed. You won't be able to wash this out. Better still replace the whole fixture with a new LED integrated one.

-Replace any existing incandescent or flourescent bulbs with LED bulbs

-Remove all small area mats as they chop up the floor space, making it look smaller. If you like the feel of carpet, cover the floor with a large area carpet instead, or wall-to-walll carpeting.

-Remove or move any dark, or heavy furniture that blocks incoming light from any windows.

-Put mirrors where they reflect the incoming light from windows.

-Cover dark couches and chairs with light colored throws and pillows.

-Place additional table lamps at different heights and floor lamps throughout the rooms, especially in dark or shadowy corners.

-Install wall dimmer switches or plug in slider dimmer switches (picture below) on table lamps, to adjust the intensity of light according to time of day or season.
