I would take the hardware off, remove all drawers, and then sand and stain. It is a lot of work but well worth it once it is complete.

Wow!! This is a beautiful dresser. It looks pristine. Outside of new hardware, I'd just give it a good cleaning, deglossing, and a few coats of rubbing polyurethane to freshen it up. Or, you could consider painting it and/ or turning it into an entertainment center. Hey, I'll swap you my mother's speckled pecan, same era, for your mother's maple. (just kidding) Seriously though, new hardware would change it so much. I've seen similar new units online where the major difference between those and yours is the hardware. Good luck!

Chalk paint it....you can make your own with a tester of paint, water and plaster of paris....then apply a wax sealer

  • What is your style? You could go with the farmhouse look and paint it, or strip itand restain a darker color. Either will look good - just depends on your taste and what blends in with the rest of your furnishings. I would also change the hardware. Save these for future projects or donate to a Habitat re store.

It's beautiful wood! I have a cherry chest of drawers of my mother's with those same handles, and they really dated it -- I found some cool handles at Habitat for Humanity that I replaced them with and it's amazing how great it looks now, without the hassle of painting. (Habitat is not the only option for good prices on cool pulls -- I've shopped cabinet shops and hardware stores for items they might only have a few of -- a few to them! -- and gotten really good mark-downs, even if I had to ask.) I really like good wood -- solidly built pieces with properly built drawers, etc.

You have a great set but it's just dated, but satin black spray paint ( no gloss or flat paint) in satin and new handles will bring it right back to date, here's a picture of the idea I just did this to mine. Just remember the first coat light and let it dry good before the second coat. Remove hardware before starting😁

Hello Jerripina; Please do yourself a favor, and look inside of the drawers, to see if there is a makers mark??

There should be a place where it plainly states who made the set.

Also tell me , if the drawers have dovetailed joints??

The piece looks like it is from the 1940's.

It is solid wood, and 'new' furniture is not made the same way that your pieces once were.

If your entire set of furniture looks as good as this one piece does, I would leave it alone!!!!!

It is Beautiful, and it has some value to it.

I hope that this helps you!!! Take Care!

If you want to modernize it, please do paint it. It will be gorgeous. Restaining it will freshen it, but it will look the same. You don’t have to sand it to paint it (although you can sand it if you want). I have painted everything you can think of and I never sand unless the piece is in rough shape. I use liquid sandpaper. I go over the piece a few times (one right after the other—no waiting in between) and make sure that it is thoroughly covered in liquid sandpaper. Follow the directions and then prime and paint, or use chalk paint. You can make your own chalk paint easily. You can also prime and spray the knobs or leave them as is. I have included a few pictures of my 40 year old chest of drawers that I painted and used the original hardware that I painted and then used dark wax to antique.

Beautiful piece of furniture! I'd just change the handles/drawer pulls to something more contemporary. Good luck!

Please do not paint it. Please appreciate the workman ship for what it is.

Gel stain it a different color, change the hardware. Remove the mirror and possibly put a round mirror or framed metal mirror on the wall.

Definetly change the hardware and if u like the colour leave it alone or stain or paint in your favorite finish
