If it is a bedroom for only one person I would use a single bed. However we have a very small room that has a queen sized bed in it. This room has two windows, closet and an angled wall. Furnishings are a bureau, night stand, chair, bookcase and radiator. The bed has a bookcase headboard, and is in front of one of the windows. The room door, just barely clears the bed. I painted the floor many years ago. The curtains are from a yard sale. My artist husband has some of his work here. This room is not consciously decorated. You can really make a very cute room in a small space but the person who will be using it would determine the decorations.
How small is small? I have a 12x12 bedroom and was able to place 2 full size beds in it plus a cedar chest and a night stand between the beds plus a small desk and chair. It has a very large closet and doors slide across so no floor space is taken into account for it,it's very comfortable you don't feel claustrophobic in it at all. The room has one window and although not quite centered the beds are on either side of it with end table in front of window. I honestly didn't know if it would fit all of the furniture but actually have room to spare if I choose to place cedar chest at ft of a bed instead of along the wall, but with such a large closet no dresser is needed. I did try it out in a different layout and it didn't work so sometimes you just have to be willing to move furniture around to get it just right.
How about a vintage look? I redid our master bedroom and simply decorated with thrift store buys.
