If you built a Murphy bed on a half wall, the mattress would have to be folded in half so you'd have to use a thinner mattress and the cabinet would be thicker. You would also have to construct the frame to fold in half. It could be done, but I'm not sure it would be for the best.
If it's just being used infrequently, you could get a blow up mattress and a frame for it. Or a fold up cot.
I have seen them horizontal but with a half wall I don't think you can do much more than a twin. Ana White has plans for one that looks like a dresser. Really cool.
They do make fold out beds that look like a buffet. So only use half a wall.. But never seen a Murphy that would fit that space..
The frame supporting the cabinet needs to be attached to the wall at the top.
Yes, run the bed horizontally. they make kits.
Yes so long as it's the bottom half. Make a hinged down folding table with legs that fold in too that will also contain your mattress.
Yes you can buy a kit that fastens to the floor, but ask the hardware manufacturer. You could get the cabinet style that you could fasten to both floor and the stud at the top of your half wall. And if it needed additional support add I-bolts to top of cabinet and your ceiling joist and run a steel cable between them.

Rather than me list about five different companies that make Murphy Bed type spring systems, you should look up Murphy bed hinges on Youtube Just remember your murphy wall bed cannot be wider than the height of your wall. So if your wall is 48 inches your bed cannot be more than 42 inches. Your wall must be at least 60 inches long for the length of the bed. If those sizes do not work you will have to have a special order mattress built and they are EXPENSIVE!! You might want to consider a fold up futon in place of Murphy type bed. You can also call the 1-800 number for Murphy beds and they are very helpful. We called them a couple of times for the one we were building.
