Why not try using a stair railing, cut to size add leg extensions and paint it. Screw it to the bed.
Maybe hang a large bulletin board on the wall, at the head of the bed. Paint the frame in the child's favorite color, and cut a fun fabric to cover the actual board. You could remove the fabric for washing, or even change it with the seasons, or the child's interests.
