I would paint the wood & then paint the metal a different color the add a huge rd wood cirle table top on the barrel & then get smaller barrels & paint them & put small rd wood tops on the but would pad the tops with naughi leather-in a nice color to blend it all together?????????

You could make it in a bar on rollers. Put lighting and shelves. I have one from England. Get compliments all the time.

A friend of mine redoes kitchens and bathrooms.
I asked him to make me a granite tabletop for our barrel.  I left the barrel natural, but after 5 years, it needs a little refreshing.  
We just cover it for the snowy winter, and pull out the bars tools in the spring.

It reminds us of a holiday in Italy!

Split barrel down the middle, if you like! Keep the patina aged, just polyurethane the outside. Add hinges inside to keep together & also add shelving. Just another thought😀 Good luck

Personally I would turn it into a table/towel storage.   Let hubby put the door in it,  use a waterproofer,  and store pool towels.   Add a top and a couple of stools,  and it is a duel purpose item!

How about double duty.  Make a half-round table/bar, then recess a cooler in the top as well as a door on the bottom for cocktail storage.

Hi I think get some hinge's that open all the way back get some metal strips from your hardware .cut 4 slats of the barrel just below the metal strip that already on the barrel and just above the strip below it and  use your new metal strips to reattach the slats and put you hinge's on and that your door your she's is a peace of cake after that

clean up barrel.  then arrange corks on the top(really the bottom) and try various designs.  fill in all open spaces with cork sections.  top barrel with a glass top.  right  height for bar chairs,
