I love front porch Lanai's or porches where the breeze comes in, but does not look like it has been added. I would like to add columns and make this a peaceful welcoming oasis for visitors who are walking by and would like to stop and chat.I would prefer not having to remove my gutters or attaching this to my roof, but I don't know if this is possible?I need creative and comfort for this project.Thank you for your help.Lana

Can you add a couple of photos. Maybe do a pergola with a stain that would tie to you house decor.

I am wondering if I have to have a plan drawn before I move forward?

Yes Lana! A plan would be a good start to determine materials and cost! There are a few different ways to achieve the look you want so your initial idea needs to develop!

A large pergola. Add posts close to house as well so it doesn't need to be attached to the house. Check your building code first.
