What wood do you use for a pagoda?

We want to build a pagoda on our patio and we’re not sure which wood to use. Also, should it be attached to the roof, beneath the roof or freestanding?

If you plan on attaching to the house, you need to pull a permit. If free standing, chances are no permit is required. Just be mindful of local building codes.

The best two choices are cedar or redwood. Both are fairly expensive and need no maintenance and are insect resistant. However, you can use a pressure treated pine and stain or paint it, depending on your decor.

If you are building a pagoda, do not attach it to the house. A pergola (which has a flat top) can be attached - it just depends on your preference and the kind of weather you get. (gusty winds would kind of preclude attachment to keep it good and sturdy). And Naomie is correct. You will have to pull a permit if you do it yourselves. A contractor will include the permit and cost for it in his charge for the work.
