Draw out the opening, use a drill to make a hole in one corner, and then use a jigsaw to cut the opening out from the drilled hole following your markings. You could also use painters tape to outline the opening to prevent wood splintering. Use a fresh blade.
Since you say its hollow, then you would need to add wood strips to fill in the opening depending on the depth of hollow. Prestain the edges, and then use carpenters glue and clamps to hold in place to dry. I would start with 2 sides, then add your top and bottom pieces. Then add your shelf.
I would check my headboard now, and see what type of wood I have now. If it is a pressed board, then don't do it, for that is weak, and it would be a bad move, and it would NOT hold up. You can put a second table in the area next to the bed, and then you can change your room, more often. Best wishes, J.
Sharon is the pro! That is exactly the way I would do it. To add the Sharon's idea. I would build the cubbies first. Use them as a template for the hole opening. I woild also cut the holes slightly smaller than the cubbies so they slip in tightly. A little wood glue or E6000 to hold them in.
