How to router a recess in wood?

I have made a tic-tac-toe game with 3/4 board. I want to take a 3/4 the same size, make a recess to hold the part for the game. How can I router the recess. Thanks Bobby

Make a wooden frame with the inside size being the size you want the recess to be. Mount it to the wood with brads, screws, or a spray adhesive. If you choose brads or screws the holes can be filled and sanded later. Adhesive can be sanded off. Put a top bearing router bit (see picture below) in your router and router out the recess in shallow passes until you reach the depth you want. The router will leave rounded corners but they can easily be squared off with a wood chisel.
