How to fix mold behind shower stall bar?

by Kathi L
Our shower stall was installed 9 years ago and has a 4' bar across the back. No one seems to know who manufactured it and we were not given paperwork when the house was built at that time. We now have mold behind the end pieces of the bar and want to fix it. We've been told it is not repairable short of replacing the shower stall. Looking forward to a solution!
The end pieces are like a heavy clear plastic
Everyone tells us they've never seen a stall with a bar like this!

Hi Kathy I'm thinking that once you clean it with bleach if adding more clear caulk would be a good idea to fill in all of those crevices so it will be easier to clean in the future.

There is no way to take the seal off without cutting them. Not sure what we would use to replace.

bleach will not kill mildew.wrap the ends with towels soaked in white vinegar and leave on overnight

  • Vinegar! Vinegar kills mold spores, bleach does not.

I’m with Grandma’sHouseDIY and Naomi. Clean, caulk, touch up paint if you need to, and forget it. In nine more years, someone may be remodeling the bathroom. ☺️

If the mold has gotten behind the bar end pieces, my guess is, the wall is wet behind your shower stall. There are two ways to find out and fix it, don't just caulk it. You could be covering up a problem that will get bigger as time goes on. Your health could be at stake.

One, as long both sides of the shower are on inside walls, you could go in from the other side. That way you can keep your shower in place, but you will mess up two other areas. Do all repairs, clean up, seal it properly and close up the wall.

Two, and the one that I would do. Get rid of that thing, it looks like a very poor design. I've never seen one like that, no wonder you're having a problem. Then either get another one piece with no holes in it or tile the shower. Good luck.
