I have washed them several times with fabric softener. No luck.

Maybe it isn't sizing you are feeling. It could be the thread count. The lower the count, the rougher it feels. Sorry.

Try washing with super hot water and a cup of baking soda (no detergent) and put a good dose of vinegar in the rinse.
  • My suggestion is the same as Laurie's. What is the fabric content of your sheets? May make a difference.

sometimes soaking them in double fabric softener overnight will help on low thread count

The fabric count is not as important as you, or many others think, feel the fabric and see how it feels to you, that is what you go on. Some claim that sheets get softer with washing, maybe, maybe not. For yours, it is as good as it gets no matter the processing.

I've used Synthropol to remove sizing from fabric before dyeing. It can be used in a washer in place of detergent. It could help with your sheets. Good luck.
